Kidney stone removal uses different treatments depending on the stone’s size and location. Doctors usually choose methods that avoid large cuts, helping patients recover faster. These treatments break the stone or remove it safely to prevent pain, blockage, or infection. Sometimes a small stent is placed to help urine flow during healing.

Ureteroscopy (URS) is a common method where a thin scope is passed through the urinary tract to reach the stone. The doctor breaks it with a laser or removes small pieces. RIRS works similarly but reaches stones inside the kidney. These methods need no outside cuts and allow quick recovery for most patients.

For very large stones, doctors may use PCNL, which needs a small cut in the back to remove the stone directly. Another option is ESWL, which uses sound waves from outside the body to break stones into tiny pieces. ESWL usually has a short recovery time, and open surgery is rarely needed today.
